ABU DHABI // An Emirati man has been arrested for allegedly inciting hatred and defaming his country online.
Prosecutors said on Monday night that Ahmed Mansour Al Shehhi was detained in connection with cyber crime offences.
Prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Al Shehhi on Sunday, after they said they found electronic evidence of him using social media platforms to spread false information, rumours, and false news to arouse division, sectarianism and hatred.
He promoted ideas that damaged the reputation of the UAE, prosecutors said, and aimed to influence people to go against its laws and regulations.
His actions imposed a threat to the country’s stability and security, it is alleged.
His arrest warrant states that he will immediately appear in front of prosecutors for further investigation. The attorney general is following the investigation.
