Tens of thousands of Nepalese families have received help from Emirates Red Crescent since an earthquake hit the country in April.

So far, the organisation has spent Dh3 million supporting 26,000 families - the equivalent of about 130,000 people, the state news agency Wam reported.

In the first phase of its aid plan, ERC provided 31,150 food parcels, 15,000 healthcare packages, 8,000 blankets, 6,600 waterproof coats, 5,000 mattresses, 9,000 items of clothing, and kitchen utensils.

ERC, said Humaid Al Shamsi, deputy secretary general for international aid, intensified its efforts in Nepal in line with the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and President of ERC.

The teams on the ground, Mr Al Shamsi added, met with Nepal Red Cross representatives and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to discuss ways of improving the humanitarian response to the disaster.

In addition to taking relief aid to tens of villages and towns around the capital, Kathmandu, ERC teams also delivered aid to hospitals in need of medical supplies.
