Two new Indian schools to open in Dubai

Dubai adds 4,800 new places in Indian schools for the upcoming year.

DUBAI // More than 4,800 places have been created at Indian schools for the new academic year, which begins today, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) said yesterday.

Two Indian schools - The Indian High School branch in Dubai Silicon Oasis and JSS School in Al Safa - will open this month.

The schools can accommodate 1,000 students this month, and the remainder by September.

Al Majd Indian School has meanwhile applied for permission to shut down, the KHDA said.

"We are in continuous communication with the operators of private schools in Dubai that offer a good standard of education, for their expansion to meet the needs of the parents," said Mohammed Darwish, chief of the KHDA's Regulations and Compliance Commission (RCC).

Al Majd School, which had been serving 1,000 pupils, failed to meet the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau's education standards, and applied to close this year.

In February, Rafiq Rahim, principal of the school, said the low fee structure did not allow the school to improve. The new administration said it would focus on opening a higher quality school by 2012.

Mr Darwish said the authority was trying to create alternatives for students affected. "The schools they move to must have at least an 'acceptable' grading from the school inspectors."
