Every teacher will soon have to be licensed to be able to work in the country, the undersecretary at the Ministry of Education said on Sunday.

Marwan Al Sawaleh said developments are under way to establish a new federal licensing system.

“We are moving and looking forwards for a new teacher-licensing system that will be introduced in the UAE,” Mr Al Sawaleh said. “This will also enhance the quality of the teacher output and pedagogy.”

He said the new licensing could be implemented “within a year or less than a year” and that the ministry was still in the evaluation and planning stages.

“Now it’s already cleared the standards and they are just lining it up and have the final touch up and will present it to the Cabinet for final approval towards the end of the year,” Mr Al Sawaleh said.

“It will be implemented in stages, not all at once. We know the market and the population of the teachers, there will be a proper plan and a proper training plan also to introduce the teacher licensing.”
