ABU DHABI // School communities in the capital are being encouraged to take part in a variety of sports on Wednesday as part of a health and wellness initiative.

Abu Dhabi Education Council said about 140,000 people, including pupils, school faculty, administrative staff and parents, are expected to take part in the activities.

Sports Day is affiliated with Adec’s Champions of Tomorrow campaign, which was launched this month to make schools more sport-friendly, while encouraging the emirate – and the country at large – to be more involved in the international sporting scene.

Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Adec’s school operations executive director, said the initiative aimed to promote fair competition and teamwork skills, as well as strengthening the bond among parents and school officials.

“Through this event we aim to encourage behaviour that has a positive impact on the community, education, employment and that helps promote greater human capital, which is a pillar for achieving a comprehensive and balanced development,” he said.

Adec is also taking part in a marathon at Yas Marina Circuit on February 26, when about 3,000 pupils will run.
