DUBAI // A Roads and Transport Authority inspector who was accused of asking for a bribe from a man in return for cancelling a fine against him has been found not guilty.

Dubai Criminal Court acquitted Emirati J H, 35, on Thursday.

Pakistani K K, 51, told prosecutors that J H asked him to pay Dh1,500 in return for cancelling a Dh4,000 fine issued to the Pakistani for using his private car as a taxi. He said he was given the fine by an undercover RTA inspector.

“I was then given the defendant’s number by my cousin, who told me that the inspector would help me erase any RTA breaches in return for money,” K K said.

The Pakistani said the inspector contacted him two days later and allegedly asked for Dh1,500 and the original fine, which he handed over, following which J H stopped taking his calls and did not cancel the fine.

“I therefore paid the fine at the RTA, then asked J H to return my money. Two months later, he returned Dh900, so I reported him to RTA, which referred the matter to police,” K K said.

RTA legal researcher A M said: “When confronted, J H denied the accusations and told us that they were malicious because he reported one of K K’s relatives for absconding and that he took Dh1,500 from K K to pay for a plane ticket for his relative after he was deported by court.”
