Dubai prisoner found not guilty of raping cellmate, court rules

Court says there is not enough evidence to convict Emirati of raping countryman after the latter had taken sleeping tablets.

DUBAI // An inmate has been cleared of raping his cellmate at Dubai Central Prison.

Emirati AA, 33, was believed to have waited for his fellow inmate to take medication that put him into a deep sleep then raped him on October 1, 2013. However, due to a lack of evidence, the court found him not guilty.

Alleged victim and compatriot AD, 23, said: “It was nearly 9pm when I took five tablets prescribed by the psychiatrist, some of which are sleeping pills.

“I woke up at almost 4am to bad pain and found the defendant behind me — I knew then he had raped me.”

AD said he confronted the defendant about his suspicions but his accusations were denied.

A forensic report found DNA traces of the defendant on the clothes and body of AD and also found that AD had hepatitis C. It was not made clear how the traces of DNA got on to AD’s body and clothes.
