DUBAI // A policewoman sentenced to three months in jail for stealing money from a wallet left at Dubai International Airport has had her prison term suspended by the Dubai Court of Appeal.

The Emirati, 28, was convicted of breach of trust and embezzlement. She denied the charges at the Dubai Criminal Court.

On August 5 last year she was seen picking up a wallet from lost property.

“Her job is to search travellers, looking for any suspicious stuff,” said an Emirati policeman, 36. “There is a box for any items passengers misplace. I watched as she opened the wallet and took cash.”

The policewoman was arrested on August 8 and admitted taking US dollars and changing them into dirhams at an exchange house in the airport.

In court last September she was sentenced to three months in jail and fined Dh2,000. The Court of Appeal upheld the jail term and fine but ordered her prison sentence to be suspended.
