DUBAI // A man jailed for being part of a gang that kidnapped a businessman for five days and demanded a Dh400,000 ransom had his one-year term upheld by the Dubai Court of Appeal.

The defendant’s three accomplices, Pakistanis A J, 28, and N A, 38, and S K, 30, from Afghanistan were all sentenced to a year in prison each last year.

But N S, 29, also from Pakistan, was at large during their trial. He was arrested later.

The four kidnapped 45-year-old Indian A T after his return to Dubai from a two-month visit to India in May last year.

The man was locked up for five days and was only allowed to make calls to his wife and sister in India to ask them to arrange the money, the court heard.

On the last day of the five days, the wife was told by her husband’s kidnappers that if the money was not wired by the end of day, they would kill him. Police were then informed.

The defendants will be deported after their jail terms.
