DUBAI// A hairdresser who locked up two female government inspectors who came to investigate an illegal resident was jailed for three years on Sunday.

On January 28, Ministry of Labour inspectors A A and Z K visited a beauty salon in Muraqqabat after receiving a report that an illegal resident had been working there.

“We found the illegal resident just sitting there but the defendant was not at the salon and came minutes later,” said A A, an Emirati.

When the hairdresser, Y S, 30, from Ethiopia, arrived she asked to see the inspectors’ IDs and locked the salon’s door.

“She told us that we won’t leave before the owner of the place comes,” testified A A.

She added that Y S had snatched the documents of the illegal resident from the other inspector’s hand.

At the Criminal Court, Y S claimed she had been previously been assaulted by inspectors from the Ministry of Labour.

“All the time we were there, she did not say anything about being previously assaulted by other inspectors, she only said that the illegal resident was not working at the salon and she was her relative and comes with her to the salon every day,” said A A.

The court also ordered Y S to be deported after she completed her sentence.
