DUBAI // A Dubai airport employee hid money she stole from a passenger in her underwear, a court was told on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Filipina was charged with theft after she allegedly took nearly Dh500 in foreign banknotes from a passenger’s personal belongings while they were going through security screening at Terminal 3 in December last year.

She told prosecutors that she was going through a rough financial period.

“I hid the money in my pocket, before I went on my break in the cafeteria,” she said.

Upon her return, she was summoned by police.

“I was scared, so I took the money from my pocket and hid it in my underwear while a policewoman searched my bag,” she said.

The officer found British pounds, Australian and New Zealand dollars tucked in her underwear when she underwent a physical search.

On Sunday, the defendant did not appear in court to enter a plea.

The next hearing was set for March 10.
