DUBAI // An airline transit passenger who was caught trying to smuggle drugs through Dubai International Airport will spend the next 10 years behind bars.

Nigerian S N was found guilty of carrying more than one kilogram of cocaine in his stomach. He was also fined Dh50,000.

The 40-year-old was arrested on November 16 last year after he got off a plane in Dubai. He had swallowed 80 capsules of the drug.

Policeman K A, 29, said the capsules were spotted by custom inspectors when S N passed through an X-ray scanner.

“We found 80 capsules in his stomach containing 1.69 kilograms of cocaine,” said K A.

He added that S N was referred to police then to Rashid Hospital to remove the capsules.

S N denied charges in court in February. However, he was convicted and will be deported after serving his jail term.
