DUBAI // A du auction in which a mobile phone number was sold for a record Dh8 million raised Dh18.9million for UAE charities.

A portion of the proceeds will go to two charities: Alam wa Amal on Sharjah TV, and Emarat El Kheir on Noor Dubai Radio Channel.

Alam Wa Amal (pain and hope) made its debut on Sharjah TV in 2006. The programme aims to raise funds to provide health treatment for those in need.

Similarly, Emarat El Kheir, which started broadcasting on Noor Dubai radio more than five years ago, helps needy and sick people by collecting donations and starting charitable projects under the sponsorship of Dar El Kheir. It is supported by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department.

“At du our strategy is aimed at more than just connecting people through telecommunications; we want to establish meaningful bonds with the people we share our world with,” said Ahmed Aburahima, executive vice president of government relations, human resources and shared services at du. “We are extremely proud to have added life-to-life, not only by providing our customers with such a lively auction, but also by inspiring them to give back to the community through their participation.”

The event at  Festival City on Saturday night saw Emirati businessman Mohamed Hilal  successfully bid for the number 0522222222 , marking a new record in the history of UAE number auctions.

The second highest bid of the day was Dh4,150,000 for the number 052 200 0000.

Seventy unique numbers in four different categories; Gold, Diamond, Platinum and Platinum Plus, were also auctioned at the special number auction; a first for the telecoms operator.

Its competitor Etisalat has held similar events previously.
