Two Emiratis who were sentenced to four years in jail for using and possessing heroin have asked the Court of Appeal in Al Dhafrah for rehabilitation.
The defendants said they had never received addiction treatment and that it was necessary for them to resume normal life.
The first defendant admitted he had been arrested for drug use a few years ago but did not receive treatment and continued to take drugs. The second defendant said this was his first arrest and asked for treatment under Article 42 of the anti-drug law which stipulates that a court may place the defendant in a rehabilitation centre instead of prison.
The court of appeal ruled that the defendants appear before a specialised medical committee and deferred the verdict to December 17.
