Dozen arrests after fatal Sharjah stabbing

The body of a man who was stabbed to death at Sharjah's Al Ghuwair market will be repatriated Wednesday night, according to his relatives.

Mohammed Sharief, 34, a father of two, died on Saturday night during a dispute with a gang of about 15 men. The fight broke out after a number of men, believed to be Pakistanis, entered his electronics shop and became abusive.

Police have arrested more than dozen people in connection with the fight, in which four other people were injured. Two of the injured continue to receive treatment at Kuwait Hospital.

Abdul Salam, a relative of, said that his body would be taken to his native town in Kasargod in Kerala.

"All arrangements have been made to take the body to India. We are likely to perform the final rites on Wednesday," said Mr Salam. He added that the family "are devastated to know that he is no more. The family was with him until last week".

Mr Sharief had been running the Yafa Electronics shop in Sharjah's commercial district for the past 15 years. Shopkeepers in the area shut their businesses for a day as a mark of respect.

Khalil Mattumal, who tried to help Mr Sharief during the fight, was taken to hospital suffering stab wounds to his stomach.

Mr Mattumal was discharged on Sunday and is recovering at his home in Rolla. "It is too difficult for me to overcome from the shocking incident," he said. "I saw my friend being stabbed in the stomach. It is ghastly."
