A community centre for the elderly is set to be given a Dh5million facelift as part of a raft of plans in the pipeline for older members of society.

Dubai Health Authority’s Community Centre for the Elderly, in Al Mamzar, will be renovated and expanded as part of the plans.

It will also be renamed the Family Gathering Centre, in order to promote the importance of family culture, said Essa Al Maidoor, the authority’s director general.

The expansion project, set for completion at the end of the year, will include a heritage market, large garden areas for socialising and a mosque with the capacity for 150 worshippers, he said.

It is among many plans to enhance care for the elderly in the emirate, including a mobile geriatric clinic that will provide medical, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. Plans for more elderly centres in Dubai are also in the works.
