DUBAI// A 25-year-old dancer tried to kill herself by swallowing Dettol cleaning fluid after a family argument, a court heard.
R P, from India, was not present at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on Monday to answer the charges of attempted suicide.
Prosecutors said that on December 20, R P was taken to Rashid Hospital where she was treated with a gastric lavage procedure. Staff there called the police once she was in a stable condition.
During prosecution interrogation, the defendant said that she had argued with her family during a phone call to India and felt desperate afterwards.
“But I decided not to end my life but only take a little bit of the detergent in order to have my family sympathise with me,” R P told prosecutors, although she would not inform them about the cause of the altercation with her family.
After drinking the Dettol, she said she started feeling a severe abdominal pain and repeatedly vomited, before her colleague took her to hospital.
R P has been summoned to attend the next hearing on February 6.
