Stabbed labourer forgives attacker

DUBAI // A labourer who was stabbed by his roommate in a drunken fight over a television's remote control told the Dubai Criminal Court yesterday that he forgave his attacker.

SF, a 56-year-old Indian, was stabbed in his abdomen and behind his ear by his compatriot KS, 52, during the fight at their Jebel Ali labour camp on August 31. But despite his wounds, he suffered no permanent disability.

"I have reconciled with him and we are friends," SF told presiding judge Maher Al Mahdi yesterday. "The reason behind the stabbing was the fight over the remote control and we also had a been drinking a little."

He said that he did not believe his room mate intended to kill him. "He stabbed me twice, I fell on the floor and then he stopped and left the room," said the labourer, adding, "We have never had any previous fights."

Another labourer who saw the fight said that both men were drunk at the time and were blaming each other for damage caused to the remote control.

He said that the two men often fought and that the knife had been bought from a supermarket after one such clash.

KS yesterday denied attempted murder, confessing to the stabbing, but saying that he did not intend to kill. A verdict is expected on June 24.
