DUBAI // A maid and her lover are charged with having illicit sex in the ocean to avoid being caught, a court heard today.

The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours was told that the Emirati sponsor of the 26-year-old MM, Filipina, took her to the hospital in June when she started complaining of stomach pains. But doctors there told him she was pregnant.

The sponsor reported her to police, where she confessed to having sex three times with her Pakistani lover in the waters off the Jumeirah Open Beach.

MM and GE, 25, who is married, are charged with having illicit sex.

MM confessed that she would leave her sponsor's house in Al Jafiliah area late at night, after everyone was asleep, and head to a nightclub with her friends. She said she met GE at the President Hotel's nightclub in February.

"I would sneak out of the villa using my spare key after everyone has slept, then take a taxi to the nightclub," MM told prosecutors.

The couple started meeting at the Open Beach, where they had sex while swimming, records show.

MM confessed before court.

The next hearing will be on August 2 to summon GE.

Hidden killer

Sepsis arises when the body tries to fight an infection but damages its own tissue and organs in the process.

The World Health Organisation estimates it affects about 30 million people each year and that about six million die.

Of those about three million are newborns and 1.2 are young children.

Patients with septic shock must often have limbs amputated if clots in their limbs prevent blood flow, causing the limbs to die.

Campaigners say the condition is often diagnosed far too late by medical professionals and that many patients wait too long to seek treatment, confusing the symptoms with flu.
