A man who said he was 'too drunk' to recall launching an attack on two police officers has been sentenced to three months in prison.

The offender, 23, headbutted one of the officers and smashed a bottle of alcohol over the head of his colleague in Barsha Heights, Dubai, on August 26 of last year.

Police had been called out after receiving reports about the drunken behaviour of a man in the area.

When they arrived, they spotted the accused being chased by security guards from a nearby hotel.

When one of the officers, 31, tried to stop him, the defendant struck him over the head with a bottle.

The man, from Saudi Arabia, was restrained and placed in handcuffs, only for him to headbutt the other officer as he was being put in the police patrol car.

Both victims were treated at Rashid Hospital for minor injuries.

At Dubai Criminal Court last month, the accused denied charges of assaulting and insulting officers.

But he was found guilty of both charges at the latest hearing on Wednesday.

“I didn’t know they were police officers and I do not recall anything, I was too drunk,” he told judges.

He will be deported after serving his prison term.
