Man jailed for raping woman he lured to UAE with job promise

DUBAI // A man who raped a woman after luring her into the country with the promise of a decent job was today sentenced to five and a half years in prison and fined Dh1,000.

JA, 45, from Bangladesh, attacked the woman repeatedly after picking her up from Abu Dhabi Airport on November 24 last year and driving her to a one-bedroom apartment in Muraqqabat.

The woman, who thought she was being driven to a beauty salon where she would work, said she could smell alcohol on him during the attack.

After raping the woman for the third time the man fell asleep. The woman was rescued the next morning after she stood on the apartment's balcony and screamed at passersby for help.

Minutes later, the building's security guard accompanied by police officers entered the flat and arrested the man.

At the Criminal Court he was charged with rape, illegal consumption of alcohol and returning to the country illegally after being deported. He was sentenced to five years for the rape charge, six month for illegal residence, and fined Dh1,000 for the alcohol charge.

He will be deported after completing his prison term.
