DUBAI // A drunk man beat his wife before urinating on her and throwing her from a second-floor balcony, a court heard today.
FZ, an 18-year-old Tajik housewife, told the Criminal Court that her husband JS, a 37-year-old Tajik businessman, told her to bring their daughter and meet him at a hotel apartment he was renting in Al Rafaa on April 8.
When she arrived at about 8.30pm he was not there so a hotel worker opened the apartment for her and she waited for him to arrive.
Ten minutes later he came in and when she asked him what he had been doing an argument ensued.
"He started screaming at me then hit me several times on my head while I was holding our baby" said the wife.
She said she begged him to stop and asked why he was hitting her, but he didn't reply, instead snatching her mobile phone and smashing it on the floor.
He then called another woman and told her he had assaulted his wife. "She told him that I deserved it and that I had relations with other men and that she could find another woman for him to marry," said the wife.
"He then urinated on me and our baby then left."
The woman said she could remember nothing after this until she woke up at hospital.
Prosecutors claim her husband threw her off the apartment's second-storey balcony. Her husband denies this, claiming that she jumped after he confronted her about working as a prostitute.
The Indian security guard JS, 23, said he heard the sound of the woman's body hitting the ground outside the hotel and went to help.
"She whispered into my ear that her baby was in the apartment," said the security guard.
He said the woman's husband arrived so he went to the hotel reception to report what had happened. When he returned the husband had disappeared.
The husband told the court that he ran away because he was afraid police would arrest him for a number of bounced cheques he had written.
He was arrested nearby shortly after fleeing the scene.
The woman's father, DZ, a 50-year-old Tajik businessman, said his friend had told him his daughter had been involved in an accident and taken to Rashid Hospital.
"I rushed to the hospital along with my wife and saw my daughter bruised, with broken legs and blood stains on her. She told me her husband threw her off a second-floor balcony."
The husband denied a charge of attempted murder. The case was adjourned to October 10.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

What is myofascial pain syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissue. MPS is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles, which develops knots, also known as trigger points).
What are trigger points?
Trigger points are irritable knots in the soft tissue that covers muscle tissue. Through injury or overuse, muscle fibres contract as a reactive and protective measure, creating tension in the form of hard and, palpable nodules. Overuse and sustained posture are the main culprits in developing trigger points.
What is myofascial or trigger-point release?
Releasing these nodules requires a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure to release muscular shortness and tightness. This eliminates restrictions in connective tissue in orderto restore motion and alleviate pain. Therapy balls have proven effective at causing enough commotion in the tissue, prompting the release of these hard knots.

What is an ETF?
An exchange traded fund is a type of investment fund that can be traded quickly and easily, just like stocks and shares. They come with no upfront costs aside from your brokerage's dealing charges and annual fees, which are far lower than on traditional mutual investment funds. Charges are as low as 0.03 per cent on one of the very cheapest (and most popular), Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, with the maximum around 0.75 per cent.
There is no fund manager deciding which stocks and other assets to invest in, instead they passively track their chosen index, country, region or commodity, regardless of whether it goes up or down.
The first ETF was launched as recently as 1993, but the sector boasted $5.78 billion in assets under management at the end of September as inflows hit record highs, according to the latest figures from ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm.
There are thousands to choose from, with the five largest providers BlackRock’s iShares, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisers, Deutsche Bank X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.
While the best-known track major indices such as MSCI World, the S&P 500 and FTSE 100, you can also invest in specific countries or regions, large, medium or small companies, government bonds, gold, crude oil, cocoa, water, carbon, cattle, corn futures, currency shifts or even a stock market crash.
