DUBAI // A student caught selling synthetic cannabis had his 10-year jail term reduced to five years by the Appeals Court yesterday.

His fine was also cut from Dh50,000 to Dh10,000.

AR, 23, a Briton, was arrested in his car at Jumeirah Lakes on July 9 last year as part of a police sting operation after a tip-off to the anti-narcotics department.

An undercover officer posed as a buyer and arranged to meet the student, who was found with 4.19 grams of the drug spice in his pocket.

At his trial at the Criminal Court, the student denied but was found guilty of possessing drugs, drug peddling, consuming drugs and facilitating drug consumption for someone else.

The Appeals Court upheld the guilty verdicts but commuted his punishments. He will be deported after his prison term.
