A drug smuggler who was caught with more than 2 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside 80 condoms has been handed a ten year jail sentence.
The Peruvian traveller was stopped by customs officials at Dubai International Airport while on his way to catch a connecting flight to Egypt on February 10 of this year.
During police questioning, the man, 49, admitted he was attempting to sneak the haul of drugs into Egypt.
A forensic report found that he was in possession of 2.3 kilograms of the drug.
The man denied a charge of smuggling drugs with intent to distribute when he first appeared before Dubai Criminal Court earlier this month.
But he was found guilty of the charge at a hearing on Monday and ordered to serve ten years in prison, as well as pay a Dh100,000 fine.
He can appeal the sentence within the next two weeks.
