What is my legal position if I haggle over a taxi fare in Dubai? If my driver gets lost and takes me on an extra 3-mile trip that costs an additional Dh20, am I expected to pay the full fare?
According to RTA regulations, the taxi fare must be paid in full and a complaint should be raised with the authority quoting the taxi number and the receipt of the fare. In such events, the receipt should be kept as a record of the payment in case it is needed.
Are we being asked too many questions while remitting money to our home country?
The Commercial Transaction Law No. 18 of 1993 is the governing law that pertains to bank-related transactions. All remittances are regulated by the UAE Central Bank and any information asked of the sender is in line with those regulations.
I have been given a book and a CD as a birthday present but I already have both. I have been given the original receipt as well. Can I get a cash refund or am I only allowed a store credit voucher?
According to Article 5 of the Consumer Protection Law No. 24 of 2006, the law only provides for a refund if the product is found to be faulty, or is different to its description. If the store policy allows for a refund, you may demand it. If not, you will have to accept a credit note.
