Clothes freshened up for Sharjah's poor

SHARJAH // Thousands of poor residents will benefit from a charity project to recycle old clothes into new garments.

The scheme, Your Old Clothes into New Ones, has a budget of Dh5million.

It will help more than 4,000 families in Al Dhaid, Kalba, Khor Fakkan, Dibba Husn and Sharjah City, said Abdulla Al Khadim, the director general of Sharjah Charity International.

"We want the poor to feel good like others by putting on new clothes," Mr Al Khadim said.

"It is not good for them to just put on clothes once worn by others, some of which are ripped or stained."

Companies have offered their services to recycle donated clothes.

Mr Al Khadim appealed to all residents to donate their used clothes, regardless of their condition, instead of dropping them into the rubbish bin.

Rashid Al Hamad, the head of the project, said the charity was increasing the number of drop-off containers for old clothes at mosques in the emirate.

"At present we have about 250 drop containers, each with a capacity to take about 500kg of clothes," Mr Al Hamad said.

He said the needy families in Sharjah were already registered with the charity, but it would welcome more to take advantage of the project.

Tips to avoid getting scammed

How has net migration to UK changed?

The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.

It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.

The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.

The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.
