Charities to build homes for UAE child victims of abuse

DUBAI // Charity groups have launched a campaign to build two villas for child victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.

The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children and the Beit Al Kheir society have joined to raise funds for the project, called Qurat Al A’ayon (Precious One).

“We are hoping this campaign will give a helping hand to children who have been subjected to violence and exploitation,” said Afra Al Basti, the foundation’s director general.

“We want to provide the best conditions for these children so we will try to establish an environment very similar to that of a family, where they all feel like siblings.”

The children will live with “alternative mothers” to further encourage that  sense of family.

“Hopefully these villas will be like any other family home,” said Mrs Al Basti.

The foundation is now caring for 22 children, but the number fluctuates. Funds raised will also be used to improve other services it provides for abused children.

Mrs Al Basti said the foundation needed more funding “to be able to provide the desired service”.

The foundation, the first licensed shelter in the UAE, was established in July 2007 to offer protection and support to female and child victims domestic violence, abuse and human trafficking.

A highlight of the campaign will be the fund-raising programmes broadcast on Noor Dubai TV and radio on July 27.

Organisers hope the initiative will become an annual Ramadan campaign to coincide with the anniversary of the passing of Sheikh Zayed, the founding President.

People can donate through a bank account set up by Beit Al Kheir, or through the society's donation boxes in shopping centres.
