DUBAI // Hundreds of residents of a building in Jumeirah Lakes Towers were forced to go without running water or working lifts on the first day of Ramadan after a waterpipe burst on an upper floor in the early hours of the morning.

People living in the 39-storey Green Lakes S2 building, which has more than 240 apartments, were told that the water supply would be restored later in the evening, around sunset, when Muslim tenants broke their daily fast and prepare iftar meals.

“How can we manage without water? There could have been some arrangements to get a tanker so at least the basic supply is not affected,” said Mariam Sadani, a housewife.

“With children at home and also the first day of Ramadan, it is very difficult to manage without essential water supply.”

The building management said repair work was being carried out on the pipe that burst on the 28th floor at 4.30am.

“We apologise that residents will not have water for a whole day but supply should re-start by 8pm tonight,” a building services employee said.

“The maintenance team is working on the water issue. The lifts were automatically shut down as an emergency precaution because water entered two lifts. The lifts will restart today.”

Residents of buildings and villa communities have often faced trouble with leaking water pipes and lack of air conditioning owing to maintenance issues, particularly over summer.
