ABU DHABI // A number of Al Ain food outlets were penalised for violating food safety rules yesterday.

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority issued five violation slips and 10 warnings to bakeries and sweet shops, as part of its summer inspection campaign.

The inspection covered 18 bakeries and 11 confectioneries. More than 160 kilos of expired food was destroyed. "The purpose behind our current campaign is to ensure that the holy month of Ramadan passes off without any untoward incidents," said Mohamed Jalal Al Rayssi, the authority's communications director. "Inspectors paid special attention to the way the primary materials for food preparation were stored and the quality of the oils being used for making various sweets."
