AJMAN // A huge air-conditioned tent will be at the centre of Ramadan celebrations in Ajman this year.
The tent, being built on the emirate's corniche by the Ajman Awqaf and Islamic Affairs department, will host beach football tournaments alongside more traditional family and religious events.
Quranic competitions, Islamic seminars, children's plays and dramas will take place in the tent away from the scorching summer heat, said Saeed Seif Al Matroushi, the director general of the organising committee.
"We want everyone to be comfortable to participate in all our programmes despite the temperatures outside," he said.
The tent can hold 1,000 people. About 15 teams will compete for the Ramadan beach football trophy this year.
Away from the activities on the beach, some of the world's most renowned Quran reciters will lead a night of Taraweh prayers in Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Ajman. The reciters will include Sheikh Farsi Abed from Yemen, Sheikh Idris Abkar from Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Shirazad Abdul Rahaman from Iraq and Sheikh Abdul Razak Al Dulaimi, also from Iraq.
