Abu Dhabi Police have reminded beachgoers to follow water safety rules after seven people drowned in the emirate this year.

Police said on Sunday that it only takes a matter of minutes for someone to get into trouble, even strong swimmers and in good weather conditions.

Col Mohammed Al Ameri, head of the emergency and public safety department at Abu Dhabi Police, said the safety rules were very important and that people who don’t know how to swim should avoid getting into the water.

“Swimming without training or experience is an unjustified action that could lead to death, and to avoid that people should follow public safety instructions and make sure that a lifeguard is in the area,” said Col Al Ameri.

“Reckless swimming and long distance swimming can lead to drowning, as well as swimming in unsafe weather such as strong winds,” he said.

Children should not be left unattended near swimming pools or beaches, and should be fully aware of the risks involved.

“Fences should also be installed around pools along with non-slip flooring, while children should always be monitored by an adult and wear water safety flotation devices,” Col Al Ameri said.
