SHARJAH // Police apprehended 39 runaway maids caught living in the same apartment in Sharjah.

Sharjah Police said the maids, from Indonesia and the Philippines, were found to be in violation of residency laws and the majority had been reported by their sponsors to the police for running away.

Colonel Ibrahim Al Ajil, director of the Criminal Investigation Department said that the maids worked illegally and on a per-hour basis.

The maids have been referred to the appropriate authorities.

“We urge families to report runaway maids as soon as possible to be able to track them down,” said the colonel, adding that the longer the families wait before informing the police, the harder it would be to track them down.

He called on families to refrain from hiring illegal workers and to report illegal workers to the police.
