ABU DHABI // Twelve drivers were awarded cash prizes totalling more than Dh200,000 after being chosen by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach) as the Best Decorated Cars for the UAE's 39th National Day.

The Best Decorated Car competition was held, said Adach, to reward what they described as a spontaneous and respectful way of celebrating National Day.

The cars were chosen out of 400 vehicles that were gathered from across the country on the Abu Dhabi Corniche for a celebration organised by Adach from December 2-4. The authority said the celebration was attended by more than 700,000 people.

"This year, many artistically decorated cars were entered into the competition," said Abdullah Al Ameri, the director of culture and arts at Adach. "Car owners showed high creativity in celebrating this dear occasion; most of them posted the pictures of late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE federation, in addition to pictures of the rulers of the seven emirates, and the UAE flag.

"Some creatively wrote poems about their love for the country on their cars. That is why we gave out awards to 12 cars, instead of the 10 prizes we had originally planned."

The first-prize winner took home Dh39,000, while the second place winner won Dh35,000.

A motorcycle was also chosen for its unique National Day decoration, and its owner won Dh5,000.
