DUBAI // A maid will spend three months in jail for stealing Dh30,000 from her sponsor, who is a senior police officer.

Dubai Criminal Court convicted 29-year-old Ethiopian F A on a robbery charge.

Emirati policeman M A, 54, told the court he hired a new maid in January and, by June 20, she said she did not want to work for the family any longer and wished to return home.

“We did not mind but when my sister wanted to book her a ticket she noticed the cash in the house was missing,” the officer told the court.

He said the maid was questioned but denied knowing anything about the missing money.

However, he found that she had recently transferred a sum of Dh9,500 to Ethiopia but they did not know what happened to the rest of the stolen amount.

“We asked her to return the money and we would send her home but she refused and also stopped working at the house so I took her to the police station,” said M A.

In court, the maid denied stealing the money but was found guilty and will be deported after serving her jail term.
