ABU DHABI // It has been two weeks since the new academic year started, but the Ministry of Interior has reminded pupils, parents and motorists to exercise measures for road safety.

The ministry’s traffic coordination directorate general yesterday launched the fourth unified traffic-awareness campaign, Back To School at the end of last month as children started the new school year.

The campaign was initiated under the slogan “Their safety is our concern” and is one among many initiatives launched by the traffic sector that aims to educate students about traffic accidents.

It urged them to abide by traffic rules and safeguard themselves against the dangers of the road.

Col Nasser Ahmed Al Hosani, deputy director general of traffic coordination at the ministry, called upon all motorists, parents and other road users to cooperate with the traffic police and adhere to its rules.

“School students of all ages are a major component of human development that must be maintained,” he said. “Despite taking all preventive measures to protect them from all dangers and hazards, there is a need for more awareness and guidance for parents and people in charge of children, to protect them from potential dangers of the road.

“The campaign aims to raise the awareness of all parties involved in transporting children. It also endeavours to raise the awareness of families and disseminate the traffic culture among children and urge them to respect it.”

The campaign will be launched across the media including radio, newspapers, magazines and TV channels, as well as a number of websites and online forums.

Col Al Hosani also emphasised the need for further awareness and guidance to promote traffic safety among all pupils and school bus drivers.

The Ministry of Interior’s campaign is being conducted in cooperation with the traffic and patrol directorates across the UAE, as well as with the Ministry of Education, Emirates Transport, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, and other entities concerned with traffic safety in the public and private sectors.
