West Ham debutant and Liverpool match winner both star — EPL team of the week

Following the opening weekend of the Premier League season, Richard Jolly picks his team of the week.

Goalkeeper — Brad Guzan (Aston Villa)

Restored to the team after Shay Given left for Stoke, the American made vital saves as Villa kept a clean sheet and won at Bournemouth.

Right-back — Glen Johnson (Stoke City)

While it was a debut defeat for Johnson, the England international showed his attacking prowess as he faced his former club Liverpool.

Centre-back — Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

A solid showing as Manchester United’s new-look defence stopped Spurs from scoring in the season’s opening game.

Centre-back — Winston Reid (West Ham United)

A display of admirable defiance from the New Zealander meant Arsenal’s possession counted for nothing as West Ham recorded a shock win.

Left-back — Pape Souare (Crystal Palace)

Involved in the cleverest set-piece of the weekend when he set up Damien Delaney’s goal in the 3-1 win over promoted Norwich City.

Right midfield — Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City)

The winger had two goals within the first 30 minutes of the campaign. He was outstanding as Sunderland could not cope with him.

Centre midfield — Marc Albrighton (Leicester City)

One of the stars of Leicester’s surge to safety last season carried on his fine form. He scored to give Claudio Ranieri a debut win.

Centre midfield — Reece Oxford (West Ham United)

The second youngest player to start a game in league history, the 16-year-old showed remarkable maturity and poise at the Emirates Stadium.

Left midfield — Jefferson Montero (Swansea City)

Few wingers given Branislav Ivanovic a torrid time but the electric Ecuadorian did as Swansea deserved their point at Stamford Bridge.

Centre forward — Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)

Scored the goal of the weekend with a wonderful long-range effort to secure Liverpool a cathartic victory at Stoke.

Centre forward — Odion Ighalo (Watford)

Fooled John Stones with his skill as he scored at Goodison Park on Saturday. The Nigerian looks a fine impact substitute.
