Maktoum Challenge I, a pair of mile races on dirt, are the features on tonight's eagerly awaited opening night of the 2009 Dubai International Racing Carnival. The Purebred Arabian version carries Group 1 status with the Thoroughbred race a Group 3 contest and both of last year's winner are back to defend their crowns.
Happy Boy was trained by the Brazilian Pedro Nickel Filho when winning last year and was subsequently switched to Godolphin. He is now trained by the first-season trainer Mubarak bin Shafya and will bid to become the first horse to win this race twice. However, he faces a stiff task with most of his 11 rivals having some kind of chance in a wide open race. Last year's runner-up Gloria De Campeao will have his supporters, while Frosty Secret (third) and Etihaad (fourth) can also get closer this year. Erwan Charpy's Golden Arrow was third in 2007 and sixth last year but comes here on the back of a course and distance victory, while Doug Watson's Green Coast has also won this season.
Watson said: "He is a lovely horse and lightly raced for a six-year-old. He deserves this step back up in class." He would need to reverse course and distance form from the Godolphin Mile on World Cup night with Saudi Arabia's Don Renato who was third on that occasion and whose trainer, Jerry Barton, saddled a double last week. Godolphin's Saeed bin Suroor has saddled five winners of this race and reported his My Indy, to be ridden by Frankie Dettori who is in action for the first time this year, had 'improved throughout the summer'. That said, he will need to reverse last year's UAE 2000 Guineas and Derby form with Royal Vintage who spearheads a Mike de Kock quartet in the race. The South African won this in 2005 with Grand Emporium and said: "Royal Vintage has a bit of class but will probably come on for the run. We know conditions suit though." Stable jockey Kevin Shea rides.
The Purebred Arabian race opens the card and last year's winner Kandar Du Falgas, trained by Watson, is the choice of Sheikh Hamdan's retained jockey Richard Hills. He has to go close to a repeat win but faces a very stiff opponent in Rod Simpson's Fryvlous who has won his last three - including twice over course and distance, as well as the Group 1 National Day Cup on the Abu Dhabi turf. Simpson said: "I think these are his best conditions and he has been a star."

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues

How to come clean about financial infidelity

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.
A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.
Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.
A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.
On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.
The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.
Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.
The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.
