Venus orbits out of Paris as Federer sets up a rematch of last year's final

PARIS // Venus Williams was sent packing in the fourth round of the French Open by Russia's Nadia Petrova, who spoiled the American's chances of yet another final showdown with her sister. Williams came into the tournament seeded second, behind her sister, Serena, but Petrova pulled off a major shock with a 6-4, 6-3 victory yesterday. "I'm obviously disappointed," Williams said. "I feel like I had a day where I wanted to hit the ball cross-court and it went down the line. It just wasn't a good day."

Meanwhile, Justine Henin extended her winning streak at Roland Garros to 24 matches with a three-set win over Maria Sharapova in their third-round match. It was the first meeting between the two rivals since Henin spent 20 months in retirement before mounting a career comeback earlier this year. "I kept my chances to win this tournament," said the four-time champion, who will meet Sam Stosur in the next round. "I will give my best and enjoy it. It was a really good test."

In the men's draw, Roger Federer continued his bid for a second successive title by beating Stanislas Wawrinka, his Olympic doubles partner, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Next up for the world No 1 is Robin Soderling in a rematch of last year's final. Soderling advanced by beating Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. "I'm happy with the way things are going," Federer said. "I'm serving well, I'm moving well. Everything is fine."

Mikhail Youzhny, the 11th seed, earned his first berth in a Roland Garros quarter-final when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the eighth seed, retired with a leg injury trailing 6-2. Youzhny will play either Andy Murray or Tomas Berdych. The Briton trailed the Czech after losing the first set 4-6, before the umpire called time for persistent rain with Murray 4-3 up in the second. * Agencies

JOKE'S ON YOU

Google wasn't new to busting out April Fool's jokes: before the Gmail "prank", it tricked users with mind-reading MentalPlex responses and said well-fed pigeons were running its search engine operations .

In subsequent years, they announced home internet services through your toilet with its "patented GFlush system", made us believe the Moon's surface was made of cheese and unveiled a dating service in which they called founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page "Stanford PhD wannabes ".

But Gmail was all too real, purportedly inspired by one – a single – Google user complaining about the "poor quality of existing email services" and born "millions of M&Ms later".

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.

The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.

These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.

“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.

“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.

“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.

“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”

Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.

There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.

“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.

“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.

“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
