Naomi Osaka survived a first round scare at the Brisbane International to battle past Greece's Maria Sakkari on Tuesday, although Maria Sharapova's return to competitive action ended in a narrow defeat.
Sakkari sniffed an upset when she won the second set in a tiebreak then broke Osaka's opening service game of the third set, but the world No 3 dug deep and won 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in a two-hour opening-round clash.
Osaka, the tournament's third seed, said she was pleased with her first match of the year, after she was forced out of the WTA Finals in October with a shoulder injury.
"I'm really happy with how I served. I had to retire from my last match because of my shoulder thing, so I wasn't really sure how I was going to serve today," she said. "But I was told I hit 16 aces, so that's pretty good for me."
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova came back from a poor first set to defeat Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, while American qualifier Jennifer Brady downed Sharapova.
Sharapova, a former world No 1, was granted a wildcard into the event but after winning the first set, she eventually succumbed 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.
The five-time grand slam champion made her debut at the pre-season Mubadala World Tennis Championship last month, but she warned while in Abu Dhabi that she was going to "see how things go" during the opening stages of the season, referring to her comeback after four months sidelined with a shoulder injury.
While she fought till the end against Brady, Sharapova's lack of match sharpness was evident after producing 39 unforced errors against 31 winners.
Earlier in the day, sixth-seeded Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens progressed in three sets, beating Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Eighth seed Madison Keys served brilliantly in her impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova. The American made 70 percent of her first serves as she eased to a comfortable victory in just 66 minutes.
"I think it (my serve) was just working pretty well today," she said. "I probably took a little bit of pace off but more just because I felt like I was kind of feeling my slider a little bit more.
"It's always nice when you can not only make your first serve, but it feels like it sets up the point really well for you."
Russian qualifier Liudmila Samsonova caused an upset when she beat former US Open champion Sloane Stephens.
Samsonova, playing only her seventh main draw WTA tournament, recorded her first victory over a top-30 player with her 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win.
In other matches, Yulia Putinseva of Kazakhstan beat Croatia's Donna Vekic 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and Estonian Anett Kontaveit overpowered Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei 6-4, 6-1.
Strait of Hormuz
Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.
The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.
Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.
Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.

New process leads to panic among jobseekers
As a UAE-based travel agent who processes tourist visas from the Philippines, Jennifer Pacia Gado is fielding a lot of calls from concerned travellers just now. And they are all asking the same question.
“My clients are mostly Filipinos, and they [all want to know] about good conduct certificates,” says the 34-year-old Filipina, who has lived in the UAE for five years.
Ms Gado contacted the Philippines Embassy to get more information on the certificate so she can share it with her clients. She says many are worried about the process and associated costs – which could be as high as Dh500 to obtain and attest a good conduct certificate from the Philippines for jobseekers already living in the UAE.
“They are worried about this because when they arrive here without the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] clearance, it is a hassle because it takes time,” she says.
“They need to go first to the embassy to apply for the application of the NBI clearance. After that they have go to the police station [in the UAE] for the fingerprints. And then they will apply for the special power of attorney so that someone can finish the process in the Philippines. So it is a long process and more expensive if you are doing it from here.”

Who was Alfred Nobel?
