Rafael Nadal will make his return to tennis action against Andy Murray or Janko Tipsarevic on the second day of this year's Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi next month.
The former world No 1, sidelined with a knee injury since Wimbledon, will take on the winner of the opening match of the competition between world number nine Tipsarevic and Murray, the US Open and Olympic champion.
A match against Murray for Nadal would be a repeat of the 2009 final for Murray, who defeated the Spaniard to claim the first title.
The second match on day one of the tournament pairs the players ranked fifth and sixth in the world, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych, with the winner taking on world number one Novak Djokovic the following day.
Murray, who has a 5-3 record against Tipsarevic on the ATP tour, will get the competition under way when he turns out in Abu Dhabi for the first time since his victory here three years ago, as part of his preparation for the Australian Open in January.
"It'll be a tough first match but I'm delighted to open the Mubadala World Tennis Championship against Janko and I hope the tournament will be the perfect preparation for the Australian Open," he said.
"It's been a fantastic year, with my first grand slam win at the US Open and a gold medal at the Olympics but, after a few weeks' rest, I'm looking forward to getting the new season off to a winning start."
Murray and Mubadala debutant Tipsarevic will open the competition at 5pm on December 27 at Zayed Sport City's international tennis complex, with Ferrer's clash with Berdych - a rematch of their weekend encounter in the Davis Cup, following straight afterwards.
Day two will see Djokovic face the winner of that match from 3pm, with Nadal facing the winner of the opener immediately after that. A third-place play-off will be held on the Saturday, immediately before the final at 5pm.
Tickets are available for the competition starting at Dh300.
Meanwhile, Nadal returned to the training court for the first time since the latest in a series of knee injuries forced his withdrawal from the US Open at the end of August.
The 11-time grand slam singles champion, who has not competed since being stunned by Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in the second round at Wimbledon in June, completed a session under the supervision of his coach and uncle Toni Nadal at an indoor facility in his home town of Manacor on the island of Majorca.
“Today was my first training session after so many weeks out,” the world No 4 said on his Facebook page. “I am making progress and I hope to continue to do so.”

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers.
