South Africans out to extend rivalry at Dubai International Racing Carnival

The action shifts to grass for the first time this season with the third meeting of the 2009 Dubai International Racing Carnival. The race in question is the Group 3 Al Rashidiya, over the same 1777m as the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night. This year's rivalry sees five South African-trained horses take on five trained locally in a fascinating clash as the South Africans seek a fourth win in the race in six years.
Herman Brown, who won in 2006, saddles two while compatriot Mike De Kock saddles three. He won the race in 2004 with subsequent Duty Free winner Right Approach and the following year with Wolf Whistle. Two of the De Kock trio, Silver Mist and Hunting Tower, have already won at the Carnival this year and stable jockey Kevin Shea rides the former, explaining: "It was a hard call but I just felt he won a better race and in good style."
The Brown duo, Oracle West and Traffic Guard, are Carnival stalwarts but both are making first appearances for their latest trainer, who said: "Oracle West probably needs a bit further but they are both well." Erwan Charpy's Mashaheed is a fascinating contender on his second local start having had one run last year. His French trainer explained: "He is a horse we really like and can hopefully go well but it does look an open race."
Mubarak Bin Shafya, in his first season training, has four carnival winners to his name already this year and one of them, Third Set, bids for a second course and distance victory this campaign. Ahmad Ajtebi retains the ride and the trainer said: "He has come out of his race well and is in good form." Shafya also runs With Interest who was behind his stable companion on that occasion. With Godolphin then, he beat Kirklees and the latter would be looking for revenge although the trainer Suroor will be without his favourite jockey Frankie Dettori. The top jockey is unwell.
The concluding mile turf handicap will feature a first UAE runner for Queen Elizabeth II when the Andrew Balding-trained Banknote faces 15 rivals in a wide open contest. jsullivan@thenational.ae 7.15pm: Fateh Field - Art Of War 7.45pm: Yamal - Brave Tin Soldier 8.15pm: Wingbeat - League Champion 8.50pm: Dynamic Saint - Bennie Blue 9.20pm: Sanbuch - Al Shemali 9.50pm: Kirklees - Traffic Guard

What drives subscription retailing?

Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.

The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.

The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.

The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.

UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.

That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.

Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
