ABU DHABI // The UAE advanced to the second round of the 2012 London Olympics qualifiers last night after completing a 10-1 aggregate victory over Sri Lanka.
They now go into the round of 24 for a home-and-away clash with an opponent they will know only after the draw on March 31.
The winner there will advance to the group phase in which 12 teams will play in three groups.
Mahdi Ali, the UAE coach, said they will draw up their plans for the next round in June only after finding out their opponents.
"It's going to be tough for both teams, particularly if we are drawn against a team from the Far East, because of the travel time," he said.
The Lankans, who were thrashed 7-1 in the first leg on Tuesday, put up a better display by holding their more skilled opponents 3-0 - giving up all three goals in the opening half - in the second leg last night at the Baniyas stadium.
The UAE broke the deadlock after knocking the ball around for 19 minutes when Rashed Eisa tapped in a cross from Ahmed Ali.
Ahmed Khalil scored twice, the first with a fierce drive from 30 yards, which hit the inside far post before deflecting into the goal, and then collected a long ball from Sultan Bargash al Minhali and shot past Sampath Buddika, the Sri Lankan goalkeeper, from the edge of the area.
The closest the UAE came to score in the second half was when Ali Mabkhout's effort to chip the ball over Buddika crashed against the crossbar five minutes from time.
"Obviously, it was hard to motivate the players when they were leading 10-1 on aggregate," coach Ali said.
"We could have stretched the lead in the second half but we couldn't score from the chances we created. But we can't take anything away from the performance of my players.
"I am very satisfied with the two games and the most important result is that we are now in the second round of this qualification."
The Lankans return home with vital game experience that can be valuable as they prepare for the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in Nepal next month.
"We can't ask for any more than they did," said Jang Jung, the South Korean coach of the islanders. "I hope they will have gained from this experience and hopefully improve for next month's competition."

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.

Pharaoh's curse

The design
The protective shell is covered in solar panels to make use of light and produce energy. This will drastically reduce energy loss.
More than 80 per cent of the energy consumed by the French pavilion will be produced by the sun.
The architecture will control light sources to provide a highly insulated and airtight building.
The forecourt is protected from the sun and the plants will refresh the inner spaces.
A micro water treatment plant will recycle used water to supply the irrigation for the plants and to flush the toilets. This will reduce the pavilion’s need for fresh water by 30 per cent.
Energy-saving equipment will be used for all lighting and projections.
Beyond its use for the expo, the pavilion will be easy to dismantle and reuse the material.

From architects to sound technicians and construction companies, a group of experts from 10 companies have created the pavilion.
Work will begin in May; the first stone will be laid in Dubai in the second quarter of 2019.

Iraq negotiating over Iran sanctions impact
- US sanctions on Iran’s energy industry and exports took effect on Monday, November 5.
- Washington issued formal waivers to eight buyers of Iranian oil, allowing them to continue limited imports. Iraq did not receive a waiver.
- Iraq’s government is cooperating with the US to contain Iranian influence in the country, and increased Iraqi oil production is helping to make up for Iranian crude that sanctions are blocking from markets, US officials say.
- Iraq, the second-biggest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, pumped last month at a record 4.78 million barrels a day, former Oil Minister Jabbar Al-Luaibi said on Oct. 20. Iraq exported 3.83 million barrels a day last month, according to tanker tracking and data from port agents.
- Iraq has been working to restore production at its northern Kirkuk oil field. Kirkuk could add 200,000 barrels a day of oil to Iraq’s total output, Hook said.
- The country stopped trucking Kirkuk oil to Iran about three weeks ago, in line with U.S. sanctions, according to four people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified because they aren’t allowed to speak to media.
