Predators 3, Islanders 2
Nashville Predators rookie defenseman Seth Jones scored the first goal of his NHL career to help his side to a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.
The Predators (2-3-0) also needed goals by left winger Patric Hornqvist and defenseman Ryan Ellis to rally from a 2-1 deficit.
The Islanders dropped to 2-2-1 with the loss.
Bruins 3, Blue Jackets 1
Loui Eriksson’s goal early in the third period was the game-winner as the Boston Bruins beat Columbus 3-1 in a tightly checked game before 14,092 fans at Nationwide Arena.
Chris Kelly and Milan Lucic also scored and goaltender Tuukka Rask had 26 saves, giving the Bruins (3-1-0) a win in their first road game of the season.
Columbus’ only score came on a power play late in the first period by defenseman Jack Johnson, his second of the season.
Avalanche 5, Capitals 1
Veteran left wing Alex Tanguay scored twice and watched youngsters Matt Duchene and Nathan MacKinnon celebrate their own tallies as the Colorado Avalanche cruised to a 5-1 rout of the Washington Capitals.
The Avalanche also received a goal from Jamie McGinn and 39 saves from goaltender Semyon Varlamov to improve to a perfect 5-0-0 under first-year coach Patrick Roy.
It is the best start for the Avalanche since they moved from Quebec to Denver 20 years ago.
The Capitals had trouble handling the Avs’ speedy forwards and fell to 1-4-0.
Red Wings 5, Flyers 2
Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and an assist and Niklas Kronwall and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists each to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Todd Bertuzzi also scored for Detroit, who picked up their first three power-play goals of the season after being 0-for-10 with the man advantage coming into the game.
Daniel Alfredsson had three assists and Jimmy Howard made 32 saves, including an outstanding stop on Wayne Simmonds’ shot from the point early in the third period while it was still 2-1.
Penguins 5, Lightning 4
Penguins center Sidney Crosby posted his eighth career hat-trick in helping Pittsburgh to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In doing so, Crosby extended his point streak against the Lightning to six games. During the streak, he has seven goals and five assists.
Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen scored the winning goal on a power play with 19 seconds left in regulation on a slap shot off an assist by Paul Martin.
Maple Leafs 6, Oilers 5 (OT)
Dave Bolland scored in overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a dramatic 6-5 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
The Leafs tied the game with 30 seconds left in the third period before Bolland scored his third goal of the season at 2:09 overtime at the end of a three-on-one breakout.
James Van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul each scored twice for the Maple Leafs (5-1) with Nazem Kadri adding one goal.
Ryan Smyth scored twice for Edmonton while Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Boyd Gordon scored one each for the Oilers (1-4).
Wild 5, Stars 1
Rookies Matt Dumba and Justin Fontaine scored their first NHL goals as the Minnesota Wild cruised to a 5-1 win over the Dallas Stars.
Matt Cooke, Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise also scored for the Wild, who improved to 2-1-2.
Dallas, playing without mainstay goalie Kari Lehtonen, fell behind 4-0 as backup netminder Dan Ellis looked unsteady at times.
Jordie Benn scored the only goal for the Stars, who are now 2-2-0.
Blackhawks 2, Sabres 1
Patrick Kane’s power play goal with 25 seconds left in the second period proved to be just enough insurance as the Chicago Blackhawks held on to beat the still-winless Buffalo Sabres 2-1.
Kane’s goal was his fourth in the Blackhawks’ first five games, a career first for the seven-year NHL veteran.
It was the second successive win for the Blackhawks (3-1-1), and the Sabres (0-5-1) are still in search of their first win in regulation time this season.
Blues 5, Rangers 3
Alexander Steen recorded his first four-point game since December 21, 2009, with one goal and three assists and David Backes scored twice to lead the St Loius Blues to a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers.
The win kept the Blues undefeated at 4-0, marking the first time the team have started with four consecutive wins.
The five goals scored by St Louis increased the total allowed by the Rangers to 20 in their last three games.
Canadiens 4, Canucks 1
Carey Price made 39 saves and Lars Eller scored a shorthanded goal late in the second period to put Montreal ahead for good for a 4-1 win over Vancouver.
The Canadiens improved to 3-2 and the Canucks fell to 3-3 as Henrik Sedin scored Vancouver’s only goal. Max Pacioretty scored on a power play to put Montreal on the board and Price turned in a .975 save percentage.
Sharks 3, Senators 2
San Jose’s rookie sensation, Tomas Hertl, scored the Sharks’ first goal less than a minute into the game for his seventh tally in five games before Zack Smith and Bobby Ryan both netted to give Ottawa a 2-1 lead after the first period.
That was it for the Senators, though, as Patrick Marleau evened it at 2-2 with a power play goal in the second and Brent Burns scored at 7:08 of the third to give the Sharks the edge.
Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner recorded 50 saves in the loss. The Sharks improved to 5-0 and Ottawa now sits 1-1-2.
