The Southampton midfielder’s treble in his side’s rout of Aston Villa came between the 12th and 15th minutes yesterday and was timed officially at two minutes, 56 seconds.
Robbie Fowler
The Liverpool forward had held the record for 20 years before yesterday after he found the net three times in four minutes, 33 seconds at Anfield in a 3-0 win over Arsenal in August 1994.
Jermain Defoe
Defoe scored five times in Tottenham Hotspur’s 9-1 rout of Wigan Athletic in November 2009, with the first three scored at White Hart Lane in only seven minutes early in the second half.
Gabriel Agbonlahor
The English forward struck his three goals in Aston Villa’s 4-2 win over Manchester City at Villa Park in August 2008 in eight minutes between the 67th and 75th minutes.
