Run, run, run and Real Madrid in the Champions League: 5 things for UAE sports fans this week

Jonathan Raymond offers a look ahead at what sports fans in the UAE can look forward to this week.

Daman’s ActiveLife Color Run, Saturday, March 12, Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi

Billing itself as ‘the happiest 5k on the planet’ the pretense behind The Color Run is in adding a dash of colourful chaos to the straightforward 5k road race.

The race begins on Saturday at Yas Marina Circuit at 8.30am. Registration starts at Dh160 and participants can sign up at The Color Run's registration portal.

Runners can still register this week and pick up their race packs at Adventure HQ stores in Yas Mall and Dalma Mall in Abu Dhabi or Times Square, JBR and Galleria Mall in Dubai. For race pack pickup schedule, see The Color Run's website.

The Color Run, which gets its name from spraying participatns with coloured powder throughout the race, concludes in party style with a festival arrangement that runs from 9.15am-noon.

ADCB Zayed Sports City 5k and 10k runs, Friday, March 11, Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi

Interested in a more straightforward run, held to IAAF standards (or just really can’t get enough running?) Then Friday also offers the Zayed Sports City 5 and 10ks.

Race Pack collection is held on race day, and last minute registration remains open until Thursday.

Spectators can also enjoy the Sportsman’s Arm restaurant and Tennis Stadium Concourse for viewing. Race starts at 6.45am.

Desert Road Runners Dubai Autodrome 10k, Saturday, March 12, Dubai Autodrome, Motor City, Dubai

Did we mention it was a good week for running?

If The Color Run isn’t your style, Dubai has its own race on offer on Saturday, the 2016 edition of the emirate’s oldest running race.

Registration is Dh170. A 2.5k race is also on offer for Dh105.

The race is scheduled to run from 6.30am-8.30am, and a breakfast is on offer afterward.

Champions League, Wolfsburg v Gent & Real Madrid v AS Roma, Tuesday March 8 (both 11.45pm); Zenit St Petersburg v Benfica (9pm) & Chelsea v Paris Saint-Germain (11.45pm), Wednesday March 9, BeIn Sports

With the exception of probably Real and Roma (Madrid host the second leg already 2-0 up), these ties are very much still in play.

Gent trail Wolfsburg 3-2 after the first leg was played in Belgium, putting the Bundesliga side at significant advantage – but, it is important to remember Wolfsburg were at one point 3-0 up in that contest.

Benfica lead Zenit narrowly 1-0 and Chelsea have an away goal in their pocket after a 2-1 first leg result in Paris.

With the Benfica-Zenit second leg in Russia, we also get the comfort of an early start time to one of these fixtures for once.

Cleveland Cavaliers v LA Clippers, Sunday, March 13, 11.30pm; BeIn Sports, WatchESPN app, NBA League Pass online

A look at LeBron James leading last season’s NBA Finals participatns against a coalescing Clippers team at a UAE-viewing-friendly time.

Hoops fans in the Emirates with League Pass subscriptions online can also see the Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks match up the night before at 11pm, and for those willing to get up the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs play at 5.30am on Sunday morning, but the easiest option promises to be Cleveland-Los Angeles.
