Abu Dhabi Harlequins were crowned UAE Premiership champions for the second time in the space of three seasons, after they beat Jebel Ali Dragons in the final.
The side from the capital won 37-27 at The Sevens, Dubai on Friday, to confirm their status as the country’s No 1 side.
Harlequins had lost just one game all season in the domestic competition, finishing the regular season 19 points clear of their final opposition in the league table.
Dragons, though, pushed them all the way in the season finale, scoring tries through Ian Overton, Niko Volavola, Matt Henry and Matt Richards.
With time ticking down, they might even have levelled the scores at 30-30, only to see a penalty kick from 30 metres out by Angus Maxfield – who had scored seven points with the boot already – hit the right-hand post.
In the end, Harlequins were good value for the victory, as they scored six tries in all. Alfred Ries scored two, while Barry Dwyer, Moeneeb Galant, Ashbey Williams and Jon Stannard also crossed.
