Rio 2016 Olympics 5: Katinka Hosszu, Greg Van Avermaet and the best of day 1

  • English
  • Arabic

The National’s sports team is helping you keep up to date with what is happening in Rio while most of us in the UAE were sleeping. Here is today’s Daily 5.

1. Records tumble and the first medals are won

It may have only been the first day of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, but medals have already been dished out and records are already tumbling in the pool. Three world records were made in swimming and there was a first gold medal for Vietnam as 12 titles were handed out on the opening day. Get the full round-up of all the action from Day 1 here.

The big moments from Day 1:

• American teenager Ginny Thrasher wins the first gold of Rio 2016 in the women’s 10m air pistol

• Belgium’s Greg Van Avermaet sees off the big guns to win the men’s cycling road race

• Britain’s Adam Peaty sets a new 100m breaststroke world record of 57.55sec

• Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu shatters 4x100m individual medley world record by more than two seconds

• Australia break women’s 4x100m freestyle record

• Hoang Xuan Vinh wins Vietnam’s first ever gold in the men’s 10m air pistol

• Thailand’s Sopita Tanasan wins the first weightlifting gold in the women’s -48kg category

2. UAE underway

The UAE’s campaign at Rio 2016 got underway on the opening day as cyclist Yousif Mirza took part in the men’s road race. Mirza was not given a finishing classification due to exceeding the race’s time limit, but the Emirati is determined to feature in the next Olympics. “It’s a great feeling to be here and the opening ceremony was a special moment,” he said. “I hope it’s not the last time for me at the Olympics.”

3. Must see events on Day 2

The action continues on the second day of Rio 2016 as Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, hits the pool as does the UAE’s Yaaqoub Al Saadi. Elsewhere, the gymnastics arena will welcome USA stars Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas, and archery continues. Much of the attention, though, will be on Britain’s Lizzie Armistead, who takes part in the women’s road race amid a row over three missed drug tests.

4. Tweet of the day

As the Games have shown time and time again, Olympic athletes come in all shapes and sizes. Here is American gymnast, Ragan Smith, posing alongside USA basketball star DeAndre Jordan. Just in case it isn’t clear, Smith is the one on the left.

5. Video of the day – Hosszu smashes world record

Three records were broken in the pool, but none were more emphatic than Hungarian Katinka Hosszu’s in the women’s 4x100m individual medley.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years

If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.

2. E-invoicing in the UAE

Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.

3. More tax audits

Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.

4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime

Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.

5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit

There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

6. Further transfer pricing enforcement

Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.

7. Limited time periods for audits

Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.

8. Pillar 2 implementation

Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.

9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services

Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.

10. Substance and CbC reporting focus

Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
