Rio 2016: Five to watch Day 10 – Renaud Lavillenie goes for pole vault glory, handball heats up

Men’s pole vault

Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie will look to become the first man in 60 years to win successive Olympic pole vault titles in the final, which starts at 3.35am UAE time tomorrow. He progressed through to the final, which will be made of 12 men, during Saturday’s qualifying session, clearing a height of 5.70 metres at his first attempt.

Women’s 10km swim

It is a small field for the women’s race on the Copacabana Beach, where the 25 swimmers will complete four laps of the bay. World champion Aurelie Muller is the favourite to prevail in the event, which begins at 4pm, though she is expected to face a tough challenge from the defending champion, Hungary’s Eva Risztov.

Women’s hockey

Quarter-finals day in the women’s competition, with all eight remaining sides in action. The Netherlands, the 2012 winners, won Group A without losing a game, and face Argentina in their last-eight match. Group B winners Great Britain take on Spain, while USA play Germany, and the first game, at 5pm, is New Zealand v Australia.

Men’s handball

Host nation Brazil have never reached the quarter-finals of the Olympic tournament before, but if they defeat already eliminated Sweden in their final Group B game, which starts at 11.40pm UAE time, they will book a last-eight spot. Already through to the knockout stages are Germany, Slovenia, France, Denmark and Croatia.

Women’s steeplechase

London 2012 winner Habiba Ghribi is back to defend her title in the 3,000-metre steeplechase race, which starts at 6.15pm. The Tunisian has not had a sterling 2016, and is only ranked 12th on performances so far this year, and Kenyan Hyvin Kiyeng and Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet are the two expected to fight it out at the front.
