With the 2015/16 English Premier League season a matter of weeks away, Richard Jolly provides his thoughts on each of the 20 teams and predicts their final league finish. Here he looks at Crystal Palace.
The theory is to never go back. Alan Pardew confounded that by effecting a triumphant return to Selhurst Park, taking Palace from the relegation zone to the top 10 with remarkable away form and scintillating counter-attacking. Now one of Palace’s former players has secured for a different type of reunion, signing Yohan Cabaye, the most perceptive passer in his Newcastle midfields. It is a sign that the financial shackles have been lifted, a year after Tony Pulis hoped they would be. The much-improved centre-back Scott Dann has signed a lucrative long-term deal, too, while goalkeeper Julian Speroni has stayed on for a further year and while Pardew has missed out on expensive strikers, the borrowed Patrick Bamford has proved prolific in the Championship so each department of his side seems to be shaping up well. Bamford could fill a void as Palace had a superb supply line last season, with Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon lending pace and skill, but lacked a consistent front man. Pardew’s own career has been marked by extended good and bad spells. With momentum and backing from the boardroom and the terraces alike, this could prove Palace’s best league campaign since Steve Coppell’s team came third in 1991.
Key Man: Yannick Bolasie – Capable of baffling any defender with his skill, the winger was used intelligently and successfully as a No 10 by Pardew. He is a talent with the ability to play for a top-six side.
Pivotal Signing: Yohan Cabaye – Terrific for Pardew at Newcastle, the Frenchman's arrival – for £10 million (Dh57m) from Paris Saint-Germain – signifies Palace's growing confidence. They have lacked a high-class playmaker. He could take them to another level.
Crucial Factor: Home form. Palace were terrific on their travels last season, winning more away games than Manchester United, but a counter-attacking team suffered a league-high 10 home defeats. This year they have to get the majority of their points at home.
Prediction: 8
