Who is Adrien Broner? All you need to know about Manny Pacquiao's opponent

  • English
  • Arabic

On Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao will defend his WBA welterweight world title in his 70th professional fight.

The 40-year-old Filipino superstar will be making his first defence of the belt he won last July against Argentine Lucas Matthysse, whom he knocked out in the seventh round for his first stoppage in almost nine years.

In the opposite corner and aiming to walk away with Pacquaio's world title is Adrien Broner, arguably the stiffest test the Filipino will face since Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2015.

So who is the man that calls himself "The Problem"? Here is a bit of information about the fighter set to go toe-to-toe with Pacquiao.

Personal info

Name: Adrien Broner
Alias: The Problem
Age: 29
Nationality: American
Height: 5ft 6in (168cm)
Reach: 69in (175cm)

Professional record

33-3-1: Broner enters his 38th professional fight against Pacquiao with a record of 33 wins with 24 knockouts, three losses, and one no contest. All three of the American's defeats have come by way of unanimous points decisions: losing to Marcos Maidana in 2013, Shawn Porter in 2015, and Mikey Garcia in 2017.

Broner's no contest result came in his sixth professional fight, against Eric Ricker in December 2008. He made his debut in his home town of Cincinnati in May 2008, knocking out Allante Davis in the first round.

Titles and credentials

Broner is a four-division world champion, winning his first world title at Super Featherweight when he knocked out Vicente Martin Rodriguez in November 2011 to claim the WBO strap.

The American became a two-weight world champion 12 months later when he stopped Antonio DeMarco to win the WBC world lightweight title.

Broner then stepped up two weight divisions to challenge Paulie Malignaggi for his WBA world welterweight title in June 2013, winning a split decision to claim three world titles in three divisions in less than two years.

Broner landed his fourth and most recent world title in October 2015 when he moved back down to contest the vacant WBA world super lightweight title against Khabib Allakhverdiev, whom he defeated via a dominant points victory.

Broner was also an accomplished amateur, compiling a 300-19 record while twice winning the National Silver Gloves championship in 2002 and 2003, before claiming bronze at the 2005 National Junior Olympics.

Fight style

Broner has long been billed as the heir apparent to Floyd Mayweather as much for his fighting style as his brash and flash lifestyle outside the ring.

As a fighter, Broner is a physical specimen: strong and fast with a dancer's footwork. And like Mayweather, he is at his most effective as a counter-puncher.

Broner also possesses a solid chin, having never been knocked out. He has visited the canvas just twice in his career, both times in the same fight during his defeat to Maidana.

Controversies

An undeniable boxing talent, Broner's behaviour has drawn plenty of criticism over the years. His disrespectful attitude towards fellow fighters - most notably mid-bout against Maidana and post-fight after bouts with Malignaggi and Jessie Vargas - lacked class, while his treatment of an Uber driver in September saw him banned from using the company.

Away from boxing, Broner was charged in October 2016 with a misdemeanor battery for allegedly choking a waitress in a nightclub. In February 2018, he again found himself on the wrong side of the law, and was booked into a county jail on a misdemeanor sexual battery charge. He was later released on bail.

The keys to beating Pacquiao

While Broner possesses the tools to trouble Pacquiao on Saturday night, there has long been an argument that the American - despite his numerous world titles - has failed to deliver when up against an elite-level opponent. He may have just turned 40, but Pacquiao is still in that bracket.

That being said, Broner's sharp counter-punching style could cause problems for Pacquiao, who's most high-profile losses came against exquisite counter-punchers - Juan Manuel Marquez and Mayweather.

Broner also has the advantage of youth. At 29, he should be in his physical prime and will have 11 years on Pacquiao.

Footwork is often key to the outcome of top-level boxing bouts, but in this instance it will be absolutely critical. Broner will need to judge his distances to keep Pacquaio out of range and strike on the counter, while not allowing the Filipino to cut off the ring.

All easier said than done of course, but Broner has the skilset to deliver. The question is, will he?

Top financial tips for graduates

Araminta Robertson, of the Financially Mint blog, shares her financial advice for university leavers:

1. Build digital or technical skills: After graduation, people can find it extremely hard to find jobs. From programming to digital marketing, your early twenties are for building skills. Future employers will want people with tech skills.

2. Side hustle: At 16, I lived in a village and started teaching online, as well as doing work as a virtual assistant and marketer. There are six skills you can use online: translation; teaching; programming; digital marketing; design and writing. If you master two, you’ll always be able to make money.

3. Networking: Knowing how to make connections is extremely useful. Use LinkedIn to find people who have the job you want, connect and ask to meet for coffee. Ask how they did it and if they know anyone who can help you. I secured quite a few clients this way.

4. Pay yourself first: The minute you receive any income, put about 15 per cent aside into a savings account you won’t touch, to go towards your emergency fund or to start investing. I do 20 per cent. It helped me start saving immediately.
